First Friday event features food trucks and…Elton?
Posted Friday, May 18, 2018

With winter finally in our rearview and the high pollen count proving spring has arrived in full force, it’s time to start thinking about summer. And what says “summer” more than the First Friday events at Austin Landing?

Start the summer off right with the June First Friday Food Truck Frenzy in The Park at Austin Landing on Friday, June 1, from 6-10:30 p.m. Favorite local band Stranger will kick things off with their fun 80s cover set, beginning at 6 p.m. From 8-10:30 p.m., Yellow Brick Road brings to the stage their tribute to Elton John, all the way from Augusta, Maine.

As always, 100 percent of the proceeds from First Friday ticket and beverage sales will be donated to a local nonprofit organization. Proceeds from the June event will go to Sophie’s “For the Love of Animals” Foundation, which was the 2018 Better Business Bureau Eclipse Integrity Award winner.

The Foundation’s primary program, “Sophie’s Companions for Veterans,” works to help veterans who suffer from a disability and would like a companion animal to assist in their everyday life. The program rescues dogs and cats from kills shelters, sends them through obedience education with a certified trainer, then connects them with veterans in need. All veterans entering the program go through an interview and screen process to ensure their new companion is the perfect fit.

Since Austin Landing started hosting these concert events three years ago, nearly $400 thousand has been raised for Miami Valley charities. This success spurred the #DoSomethingGood movement, where everyone is encouraged to pick up a wristband at Austin Landing, then snap a photo of yourself doing something good and share it with the hashtag on social media. A #DoSomethingGood post winner will be announced at the End of the Year Bash in December. Visit AustinLanding.com/dosomethinggood to see how you can join the movement.

Of course, we can’t forget the OTHER part of First Friday fun: food trucks that will be on hand to tantalize your taste buds and fill your bellies. So far, trucks are scheduled to be there from El Meson, Cupzilla Korean BBQ, Greek Street, Pit to Plate BBQ, 1776 Grill, Quite Frankly, Mary’s Waffles, Hunger Paynes, and Claybourne Grille. More are sure to be announced, so keep checking Austin Landing’s website for other listings.

But...wait...there’s more! The Southern Ohio Flying K9s will perform their aerial-tastic frisbee routine at 7:30 p.m., and Mark Thesken will put on a “speed art” show at 9:15 p.m. There’s no lack of fun for anyone!

Tickets are just $5 each and are on sale now. You can purchase them online here or at the door. You’ll need cash or credit card for tickets on-site, as well as for food and drinks at the event.

Pack up the family, bring some blankets and chairs (no coolers or backpacks, please), and plan to spend a fun summer evening at Austin Landing, enjoying the food and music, all in support of a good cause. Don't forget to grab your own #DoSomethingGood wristbands while you're there!
