Olive oil importer to open at Austin Landing
Posted Wednesday, June 24, 2015

An olive oil retailer is opening a location at Austin Landing.

The Spicy Olive, a Cincinnati-based tasting room for fresh olive oils and balsamic vinegars, plans to open its third location at Austin Landing in May, according to the company Web site and Montgomery County building permits.

"We are very excited to welcome another new business to Austin Landing in Miami Township," said Doug Barry, Miami Township Trustee President. "This is yet another unique business that is not currently within our market."

The store has locations in West Chester and in Hyde Park in Cincinnati. Owner Melanie Cedargren said she likes the community atmosphere of Austin Landing, and she's excited to participate in the Saturday farmers market.

"We'll make some things from the farmers' products with our olive oil," she said. "We already do that at Hyde Park's farmers market on Sundays."

Dorothy Lane Market has been the leading provider of high end fresh olive oils for many years in the Dayton region, but recently some independent competition has been cropping up. The Oilerie opened at The Greene last year, and now Austin Landing will be home to a fine olive oil retailer.

The trend caters especially to foodies who have traveled to Italy and tasted fresh olive oils that hold more flavor than what most Americans are used to. With more people traveling regularly and demanding higher quality food in the U.S., specialty stores like olive oil importers can thrive.

The store will open in the Progress Park Tower at 3601 Rigby Road.
